A decorative Japanese Satsuma-style earthenware vase of baluster form with a flared neck and footed base. The vase is finely decorated with hand-painted figural scenes showing traditionally dressed figures in a landscape, surrounded by floral and foliate motifs. The palette includes iron-red, cobalt blue, green and extensive gilt, applied over a cream-coloured crackle glaze ground. Dense geometric and symbolic borders enrich the neck and shoulder, while the main body panels focus on detailed figural imagery.
History and details
Satsuma ware originated in southern Japan and became popular for export due to its crackle glaze and detailed decoration. During the 20th century, Satsuma-style ceramics continued to be produced for decorative and export markets, often drawing on earlier motifs and techniques. This vase fits within that later decorative tradition.
